Wipe an Apple Business-enrolled iPad when the Hexnode remote wipe action is not accepted

TL;DR

If an Apple Business-enrolled iPad does not accept the remote wipe command from the Hexnode console, wipe the device locally using Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content and Settings. If the iPad is passcode-locked or the Settings app is inaccessible, restore the device using Recovery Mode with Finder/iTunes or Apple Configurator. After erasing, an Apple Business-assigned iPad prompts for the remote management profile again during Setup Assistant.

Executive Summary

An iPad assigned through Apple Business can be wiped even when the Hexnode remote wipe action is not accepted by the device. Use a manual erase from the Settings app when the device is accessible. Use Recovery Mode with Finder/iTunes or Apple Configurator when the device cannot be accessed from Settings. Because the device remains assigned to an MDM server in Apple Business, it returns to factory settings after the erase and prompts the user to download the assigned remote management profile during the initial setup flow.

When to use an alternative wipe method

Use the methods below when a managed iPad must be restored for reassignment and the wipe action from the Hexnode console does not complete or is not accepted by the device.

  • The iPad is enrolled through Apple Business.
  • The iPad is assigned to the required MDM server in Apple Business.
  • The remote wipe command from Hexnode does not wipe the device.
  • Physical access to the iPad is available.

Wipe the iPad from the Settings app

Use this method when the iPad is unlocked and the Settings app can be accessed.

  1. Open the Settings app on the iPad.
  2. Go to General.
  3. Select Transfer or Reset iPad.
  4. Select Erase All Content and Settings.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts to erase the device.

Restore the iPad using Recovery Mode

Use this method if the iPad is passcode-locked or the Settings menu cannot be accessed.

  1. Connect the iPad to a Mac or PC.
  2. Put the iPad into Recovery Mode.
  3. Restore the iPad using Finder/iTunes.
  4. Alternatively, restore the iPad using Apple Configurator.

Expected behavior after wiping an Apple Business-enrolled iPad

Erasing an Apple Business-enrolled iPad restores it to factory settings. During the initial Setup Assistant flow, the device automatically prompts the user to download the remote management profile assigned to it in Apple Business.

Note:

Wiping the iPad does not remove the device assignment from Apple Business. If the iPad remains assigned to the MDM server in Apple Business, the remote management prompt appears again during setup.
