How to Update Store Apps and Enterprise Apps on iOS via Hexnode UEM?
This guide provides technical procedures for administrators to manage and deploy updates for App Store apps and Enterprise (in-house) apps on iOS devices using the Hexnode UEM portal.
Updating App Store Apps
Hexnode UEM Administrators can deploy App Store apps via Actions or Required Apps policies. When pushed as a Required App, updates typically occur automatically while the policy is active.
Updating App Store Apps via Hexnode UEM
Administrators can manage App Store app updates through the Hexnode UEM portal to ensure all managed devices run the latest versions.
Prerequisite: To enable smooth background deployments, configure your endpoints before distribution. On iOS device, navigate to Settings > App Store, toggle App Updates to ON, and set App Downloads to Always Allow to prevent cellular data prompts from interrupting the process.
To manually check if an update is available for a specific store app:
- Navigate to the Apps tab.
- Apply filters: App Type as Store App and App Platform as iOS.
- Click on the specific app to be updated.
- Click the Settings (gear icon) in the top-right corner of the App details box.
- Click Check for updates.
Updating Enterprise (In-House) Apps
Enterprise apps are custom-developed IPA files. Hexnode UEM provides two primary methods for version management.
- Replacing the Existing IPA File (Recommended)
- Adding the Higher Version as a New App
For detailed instructions, see Updating iOS Enterprise Apps via Hexnode UEM.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will updating an enterprise app as a "New App" duplicate the icon on the user's iOS device?
No. iOS identifies applications using their unique Bundle ID. Even if you upload the higher version as a separate entry in the Hexnode UEM App Inventory, the target iOS device will recognize the matching Bundle ID and overwrite the existing version instead of creating a duplicate icon.
Why are iOS enterprise app updates prompting users instead of installing silently?
Silent app updates without user interaction are strictly supported on Supervised Devices. Additionally, if devices are on cellular data, ensure you instruct users to navigate to Settings > App Store > App Downloads and select Always Allow to prevent manual prompt interruptions.
