Renew an Apple VPP token with a different Apple Business user

Executive summary

Apple VPP tokens used with Hexnode UEM must be renewed periodically to keep Apps and Books app deployments and license assignments functioning. Renewal does not require the same technician or Apple Account that originally configured the token, provided the new Apple Business Manager user has sufficient privileges to download the content token. The renewed server token must be uploaded to the matching Apple VPP account in Hexnode UEM.

This article supplements the standard renewal workflow documented in How to renew a Volume Purchase Program (VPP) Token? with guidance for administrator changes and the Reclaim Licenses option.

Prerequisites for renewing the VPP token with a different Apple Account

• The Apple Account used for renewal must have an appropriate Apple Business role, such as Administrator or Content Manager.
• The token must be downloaded for the same Apps and Books location that is already associated with the Apple VPP account in Hexnode UEM.
• Access to the Hexnode UEM portal is required to upload the renewed token.

Renew the Apple VPP token in Hexnode UEM

1. Sign in to Apple Business.
2. Click the organization name in the top-right corner and select Settings.
3. From the left pane, select Payments & Billing.
4. Select Apps and Books.
5. Scroll to Content Tokens.
6. Click Download next to the required content token.
7. Sign in to the Hexnode UEM portal and go to Admin.
8. Select Apple Business/School Manager from the left pane.
9. Select Apple VPP.
10. Click the account name that matches the Apple VPP user ID for which the VPP token must be renewed.
11. Click Choose file next to Renew VPP Token file.
12. Upload the server token file downloaded from Apple Business Manager.
13. Click Save.

When to use Reclaim Licenses

For a standard annual renewal of the same Apps and Books location in the same Hexnode UEM portal, leave the option Reclaim Licenses unchecked. This renews the token and refreshes the expiration date without attempting to reclaim app licenses from another management system.

Reclaim Licenses is intended for scenarios where VPP licenses need to be pulled back from another management system, such as when migrating a VPP token from a different MDM provider to Hexnode UEM.

Note: Do not select Reclaim Licenses for a regular renewal unless license migration or reclaiming from another MDM provider is required.

What to do if the token shows pending sync

After the renewed token is saved, the token status may show pending sync while Hexnode UEM processes the updated token information. Allow the sync to complete, then verify that the token status and app deployments are functioning as expected.
