How to update the enterprise kiosk apps on Android devices

Kiosk Lockdown allows enterprises to manage dedicated devices easily by locking them down to a handful of applications. Adding in-house/enterprise apps in Kiosk mode facilitates easy management of enterprise-owned devices. Also, updating these in-house apps is quite tireless with Hexnode MDM as the device need not be taken out of the Kiosk mode to replace an app with its latest version.

There are two methods to update an enterprise app in Kiosk mode

Method 1: Replace the old APK file with the new one in the Hexnode app inventory.

Method 2: Add the new APK file as a new enterprise app in Hexnode app inventory and edit the Kiosk Lockdown policy associated with the devices.

Notes:

  1. For Samsung Knox, LG GATE, Kyocera business phones, devices with Hexnode as a system app, and Android devices with platform signed Hexnode MDM System Agent app, the in-house app in the kiosk mode gets updated without any user intervention.
  2. On other Android devices, the in-house app which is on the device will show a wrench icon on it. On clicking the wrench icon, a prompt appears asking the user whether to install new app version. Click Install to update the in-house app.

Method 1: Replace the old APK file with the new one in the Hexnode app inventory

  1. Login to your Hexnode portal.
  2. Go to Apps tab.
  3. Search for the enterprise app you want to update.
  4. Click on the app.
  5. On the App details box, click on the Settings button.
  6. Select Edit from the drop-down list.
  7. Click on the option Change beside the APK File.
  8. Upload the new app version.
  9. Click Save.


Method 2: Add the new APK file as a new enterprise app in Hexnode app inventory

  1. Login to your Hexnode MDM portal.
  2. Go to Apps tab.
  3. Click +Apps > Enterprise App.
  4. Choose the platform as Android and provide a new name for the new APK version.
  5. Choose a category and provide a suitable description.
  6. Upload the new APK file and click Save.

The Kiosk Lockdown policy associated to the device should be edited with the new APK file.

Edit the Kiosk policy by replacing the older version of the enterprise app with newer one

  • Open the kiosk policy created.
  • Remove the enterprise app having old APK file with the new enterprise app.
  • Save the policy.

Push the new app version via install application action

  1. Navigate to Manage > Devices.
  2. Select the device in kiosk mode.
  3. Click on Manage and select Install Application.
  4. Select the new app version from the list and click Done.

The app will install silently without any prompts.
