The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 was passed by the United States government to ensure security and privacy of patient information and data. HIPAA sets limitations and restrictions over the disclosure of PHI or Protected Health Information. HIPAA also defines restrictions and security measure that are to be enforced on corporate devices that house PHI.
