How to Rename a Device or Set Friendly Name using Hexnode MDM?

Hexnode MDM allows the admin to either rename a device or set a friendly name right from the MDM console. Renaming a device replaces the device’s name on the portal as well as on the device. On the other hand, the Set friendly name feature allows the admin to provide a name from the portal. This name reflects on the portal as well as on the Hexnode app but not on the device.

Renaming a Device

Renaming a device allows the admin to replace the name of the enrolled device. The newly added device name reflects on the MDM portal as well as on the device.

Note:

Only Supervised iOS devices can be renamed. This feature is currently unavailable for Android devices.

To rename a single device,

  1. On your Hexnode MDM console, go to Manage tab.
  2. Click on the device name.
  3. Click on Action and select Rename Device from the menu.
  4. Type in a name.
  5. Uncheck Append Number.
  6. Click Rename.

To rename devices in bulk,

  1. Go to Manage tab.
  2. Select the devices which need to be renamed or select all devices to rename all the enrolled devices.

To rename a single device, select the target device and in the device summary page, choose Actions > Rename Device.
  4. Provide a name.
    • Uncheck Append Number to name them all the same.
    • Check Append Number and set a starting number if you are about to name the devices differently. For example, if the name is set as “Corporate iPad” and starting number as 5, then the first device will take the name “Corporate iPad-5”, the second device “Corporate iPad-6” and so on.
  5. Click Rename.

Note:

Wildcards can be used to rename the device as per the details entered in the Hexnode console. The following wildcards are supported:

  • %devicename%
  • %username%
  • %deviceid%
  • %email%
  • %imei%
  • %osname%
  • %serialnumber%
  • %osversion%
