How to migrate Apple TV from another MDM to Hexnode?
Migrating your devices from one MDM to another requires a strategic approach to ensure a smooth transition. This guide will assist you in the migration of your Apple TVs from your legacy provider to Hexnode.
Migration steps
Follow these steps to successfully migrate your Apple TV fleet:
- Backup: Remove assets from the current MDM and back up required data.
- Accounts: Create a ADE account (if your organization doesn’t have one).
- Certificates: Migrate certificates and tokens to Hexnode UEM.
- Users: Sync users from directory services.
- Disenroll: Remove devices from the current MDM.
- Enroll: Onboard devices into Hexnode UEM.
Step 1: Remove Assets and Backup
Prior to removal, determine what data must be retained. If your current MDM supports exporting device/user details, download these records to assist with the transition.
- Action: Delete the ADE account configured in the current MDM (unlink the token) to free up your devices.
- Warning: You may have to wipe your devices prior to enrollment. Ensure required data is stored in your preferred cloud services.
Step 2: Create ADE Account
If your organization is not enrolled in Apple Business Manager, go to https://business.apple.com/ and sign up. The Device Enrollment Program are now seamlessly integrated into Apple Business Manager.
Step 3: Migrate Certificates and Tokens
APNs Certificate
You must create a new Apple Push Notification service (APNs) certificate and add it to Hexnode. This is mandatory for Apple devices to communicate with the MDM.
- Download the self-signed certificate from the Hexnode UEM portal.
- Go to the Apple Push Certificates Portal, upload the self-signed certificate, and download the APNs certificate generated by Apple.
- Upload the APNs certificate back to the Hexnode UEM portal.
ADE Server Token
If you are already using ADE, you can continue using it with Hexnode by moving your token.
- In your Apple Business Manager portal, create a new MDM server for Hexnode.
- Move your devices from the old MDM server to the new Hexnode server.
- Get the server token and upload it to your Hexnode portal.
- Create an ADE profile in Hexnode to configure the setup experience.
Step 4: Sync Users from Directory Services
You can sync users from various directory services directly to the MDM console. Unbind your current MDM vendor and configure Hexnode UEM with:
- Active Directory: Configure Active Directory settings under the admin tab.
- Microsoft Entra ID: Configure Microsoft Entra ID settings under the admin tab.
- Google Workspace: Configure Google Workspace settings to sync users and groups.
Step 5: Disenroll Devices
Disenroll all devices from your current MDM.
- Method A: Perform a disenroll action from the previous MDM console.
- Method B: Manually remove the MDM profile from the device settings (only possible if the profile is not locked).
Step 6: Enroll Devices into Hexnode UEM
Apple TVs can be enrolled using different methods depending on your requirements.
Automatic Enrollment via Apple ADE
Use ADE enrollment for eligible corporate devices.
- Requirement: Devices must be fully erased (factory reset).
- Process: Assign devices to the Hexnode UEM server in Apple Business Manager. Devices will automatically enroll upon their initial setup.
Apple Configurator Enrollment
Use Apple Configurator to enroll tvOS devices manually.
- Process: Connect the device to a Mac. When you boot up the device, the MDM enrollment configuration is automatically deployed.
