How to enroll a device in Android Enterprise as Profile Owner

Devices can be enrolled in Android Enterprise as either device owner or profile owner mode. You have to first enroll your organization in Android Enterprise program. Unlike in device owner mode, you don’t have to reset the device to its factory settings to enroll in profile owner. Once the device is enrolled as profile owner, a work container separate from the normal device workspace will be created on the device. This containerization also prevents the mixing up of personal and corporate data in the device.

Make Hexnode for Work App a Profile Owner

Google suggests personal devices to make the MDM agent a profile owner, where they obtain access to both personal and work apps, work apps being marked with a work badge. The steps to make Hexnode for Work app a profile owner is similar to enrolling devices to Hexnode UEM with the Hexnode UEM agent app.

Supported Versions:

  • Samsung Knox (SAFE) devices: Android version 6.0 and above, or Knox customisation SDK 2.6 and above.
  • General Android Devices: 5.0 and above

There are two methods to enroll a device in Profile Owner mode.

You can either enter the portal name manually or scan the QR code from the Hexnode UEM app on the Android device. The QR code is available under Enroll > Platform-Specific > Android > Android TV & Standard Device in the Hexnode portal.

Using enrollment profiles to enroll devices helps keep devices consistently configured with the required app configurations, authentication methods, enrollment restrictions, and device settings during enrollment.

Method 1

  1. Download and install Hexnode for Work from the Play Store.
  2. Open the app and either enter the portal name manually or tap the QR code icon to scan the code available under Enroll > Platform-Specific > Android > Android TV & Standard Device.
  3. Tap Continue to proceed to the work profile setup screen.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up the work profile. During this process, Hexnode for Work may minimize and relaunch automatically which is normal.
  5. Once the app relaunches, device enrollment is initialized.
  6. The device will be enrolled, but work profile creation may take additional time. You may see the message “Work profile creation failed”. If so, wait for a while; you can continue using your device in the meantime.
    • To check the work profile status, go to the device details page under Manage > Device Summary > Enrollment Details.
    • If the setup fails, retry by clicking the Retry button.
  7. When setup is complete, an additional Hexnode for Work app (with a work badge on the icon) will appear.
  8. Open the Hexnode for Work app without the badge. The app will prompt uninstallation tap Uninstall.
  9. You can use the app with the badge hereafter. Device administrator permission is granted to the Hexnode for Work app automatically.

Method 2

Hexnode UEM also supports Profile Owner enrollment through customized Enrollment Profiles, allowing IT admins to pre-configure settings and restrictions for smoother onboarding.

  1. Download and install Hexnode for Work from the Play Store.
  2. In the Hexnode UEM portal, navigate to Enroll > Platform-Specific > Android > Android Enterprise > Enrollment Profile.
    • Select an existing enrollment profile for Profile Owner mode or create a new Enrollment Profiles one with the required configurations.
  3. Once the profile is created, you can send an invite via email or SMS from the Enrollment Profiles page, instead of having the user scan a QR code. The user will receive instructions in the invitation to complete the enrollment.
  4. After entering the enrollment details successfully, tap Continue to move to the work profile setup screen.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup. The app may minimize and relaunch during the process.
  6. Once relaunched, device enrollment is initialized.
  7. If you encounter “Work profile creation failed”, wait a few minutes. You can check the status under Manage > Device Summary > Enrollment Details and retry if needed.
  8. When the work profile setup is completed, an additional Hexnode for Work app (with a work badge on the icon) will be created.
  9. Open the Hexnode for Work app without the badge and uninstall it when prompted.
  10. You can use the app with the badge hereafter. Device administrator permission is granted to the Hexnode for Work app automatically.
