Add devices to sites to optimize app distribution and network bandwidth
The Add Devices to Site remote action in Hexnode UEM allows administrators to assign devices to specific physical locations (Sites) to optimize network bandwidth and accelerate application deployment using local servers.
What is a “Site” in Hexnode UEM?
A Site represents a distinct physical location within an organization, such as a branch office, local office, or remote workspace. Grouping devices into sites enables efficient management based on geography and network infrastructure.
Role of DAFS (Distributed Apps and Files Server)
Assigning devices to a site leverages the Distributed Apps and Files Server (DAFS), an on-premises server assigned to a specific site.
- Function: DAFS hosts enterprise applications locally for Windows and macOS devices.
- Bandwidth Optimization: Devices assigned to a site fetch apps from the local DAFS server instead of Hexnode’s cloud storage.
- Performance: This reduces internet bandwidth consumption and significantly speeds up app downloads, particularly in environments with limited internet connectivity.
Step-by-Step Guide: Adding devices to a Site
Administrators can assign devices, users, device groups, user groups, or directory entities (Domains/OUs) to a site directly from the Hexnode console.

- Log in to the Hexnode UEM console.
- Navigate to the Manage tab.
- Choose the appropriate sub-tab based on the entity you wish to assign:
- Devices
- Users
- Device Groups
- User Groups
- Directory Services
- Select the target device(s), user(s), group(s), or domain(s)/OU(s).
- Click Actions > Group & Domains > Add Devices to Site.
- Select the desired Site from the list.
- Click Done.
The selected devices (or devices associated with the selected users/groups) will immediately be assigned to the specified Site.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
-
Can a device be assigned to multiple sites simultaneously?
No. A device can only belong to one Site at a time. The Add Devices to Site action associates the device exclusively with the chosen Site.
-
What happens if the “Add Devices to Site” action is executed multiple times?
If the action is performed multiple times for the same device, the new assignment replaces the previous one. The device will only remain associated with the most recently assigned Site.
-
How can IT admins view the number of devices assigned to a specific Site?
To view device counts per Site:
- Navigate to Admin > Sites and DAFS > Sites.
- Select the desired Site.
- Locate the Client devices column to see the current count of assigned devices.
