How to update store and enterprise apps on Android devices

Hexnode allows the users to update the store apps and enterprise apps on your Android/Android TV OS devices. This helps in ensuring that all the applications in use by your enterprise can easily be kept up to date.

Update Store apps on Android devices using Hexnode

If the Store app to be updated was pushed to the device as a required app via policy, then the app gets updated on the device provided the policy remains associated with the device.

  1. Go to Apps.
  2. Filter the Apps by selecting the App Type as Store App and App Platform as Android.
  3. Click on the app to be updated.
  4. Click on the Settings (gear icon) on the top right corner of the App detail box and from the drop-down list click on Check for updates.

The app will get updated if an update is available.

Otherwise, it will show that no updates are available.

Note:


For store apps, it is possible to Auto update the apps from the Google Playstore itself.

To Update Enterprise apps on Android devices using Hexnode

Enterprise Apps on Android devices can be updated by any of these two methods.

  • Method 1 – Replace the old APK file with the new one in the Hexnode App Inventory.
  • Method 2 – Push the new app(higher version) created in the Hexnode app inventory directly to the devices.

Method 1 – Replace the old APK file with the new one in the Hexnode App Inventory.

  1. Go to Apps.
  2. Filter the Apps by selecting the App Type as Enterprise App and App Platform as Android.
  3. Click on the app to be updated.
  4. Click on the Settings (gear icon) on the top right corner of the App detail box and from the drop-down list click on Edit.
  5. Click on option Change beside the APK file and upload the new APK file and click on Save.

Case 1: Required App

If the Enterprise app to be updated was pushed to the device as a required app via policy, then app gets updated on the device provided the policy remains associated with the device.

Case 2: Install Application

You can directly push the new version of the app to a device or device group by the Install application action.

  1. Go to Manage > Select the device.
  2. From Actions > Install Application.
  3. Select the new app version from the list and click on Done.

Method 2 – Push the new app (higher version) created in the Hexnode app inventory directly to the devices

To install a higher version in the device, first add the higher version APK as a new app instead of replacing the old APK in the Hexnode app inventory. It can be done by:

  1. Go to Apps > Add Apps.
  2. Select Enterprise App
  3. From the pop up choose platform as Android.
  4. Add the app name, category and description.
  5. Click-on the Choose file option and select the new APK file.
  6. Click Add.

This app can be pushed to the device either via Install Application action or via Required Apps policy.

Case 1: Required App

Follow the steps given below to update the app in the device using Required Apps policy.
Create a new policy: Go to Policies > New policy > Add Policy Name and Description > Android > Required Apps > Add app > Click Save.

Case 2: Install Application

The higher version app can be pushed to the device directly by:
Go to Manage > click on the device > Actions > Install Application > select the higher version of the app > click Done.

Notes:

  • In Samsung KNOX, LG GATE, Kyocera business devices, Rooted Android devices and Android devices with Hexnode MDM as System App, the apps will be updated silently without any prompts. However, in other devices, the users will receive a prompt on their device to install the new app version.
  • The Downloads tab in the Hexnode UEM/Hexnode for Work app helps users keep track of the download status of the enterprise apps (APK files) pushed from the Hexnode portal.
