Configure power management in managed guest sessions on ChromeOS devices

This document will help IT administrators configure power management in managed guest sessions on ChromeOS devices.

Managed guest sessions allow ChromeOS devices to be shared securely and efficiently without requiring individual user sign-ins. These sessions are centrally managed, giving IT admins control over how the devices behave, including how they manage power. Setting up power management in these sessions ensures that devices use energy wisely, preserve battery health, and optimize device performance to meet specific operational needs.

To manage this effectively, IT administrators can use Hexnode’s Power Management feature for managed guest sessions. This allows to remotely configure and enforce power-related settings across multiple devices in the organization.

Note:

Some of the power management settings are supported only on the following device types:

  • Dell Latitude 5400 Chromebook Enterprise
  • Dell Latitude 5300 2-in-1 Chromebook Enterprise
  • Dell Latitude 7410 Chromebook Enterprise
  • Dell Latitude 7410 2-in-1 Chromebook Enterprise

The following settings are available to configure,

Setting Description Supported OS Version
Screen wake lock The screen wake lock prevents devices from dimming or locking the screen while an application is running. ChromeOS 28+
Device lid close action This setting defines the action taken when the device lid is closed.
The available options are:
  • Suspend: The device enters sleep mode when the lid is closed.
  • Log the user out: The current user is logged out upon lid closure.
  • Shut down: The device powers off when the lid is closed.
  • Do nothing: No action is taken when the lid is closed.
ChromeOS 26+
Idle device management Check this option to specify the power management settings during idle time. These settings should be configured individually for when the device is On AC power and On battery. ChromeOS 35+
Idle warning (Available only when Idle device management option is checked) This setting allows you to define the duration of user inactivity after which the device displays a warning dialog indicating that the configured idle action is about to be performed.
Note:

  • The value should be between 0-2000000 seconds.
  • Idle warning delay has no effect when Idle device settings is configured as ‘Suspend‘ or ‘Do nothing‘.
ChromeOS 27+
Screen dim (Available only when Idle device management option is checked) This setting specifies the amount of time the device waits before dimming the screen due to inactivity.
Note:

  • The value should be between 0-999999 seconds.
  • Screen dim delay cannot be larger than idle timeout, screen off, or screen lock delays on AC/battery.

ChromeOS 26+
Screen off (Available only when Idle device management option is checked) This setting determines how long the device waits before turning off the screen after a period of inactivity.
Note:

  • The value should be between 0-999999 seconds.
  • Screen off delay cannot be larger than idle timeout, or screen lock delays on AC/battery.

ChromeOS 26+
Idle timeout (Available only when Idle device management option is checked) This setting specifies the amount of time the device must remain inactive before it enters idle mode.
Note:

  • The value should be between 0-999999 seconds.

ChromeOS 26+
Idle device settings (Available only when Idle device management option is checked) This setting specifies the action the device should take once it reaches the configured idle timeout period.

  • Shut down
  • Do nothing
ChromeOS 30+
Screen lock delay on AC/battery (Available only when Idle device management option is checked) This setting specifies the duration of user inactivity after which the screen is automatically locked, whether the device is running on battery or connected to AC power. ChromeOS 35+
Wait for initial user activity (Available only when Idle device management option is checked) When this setting is turned on, the device waits for the user to interact before starting timers for power-saving actions (screen dimming or sleep) and session time limits (which log the user out after a set period). ChromeOS 32+
Device not idle when audio plays If enabled, this option prevents the device from entering idle mode while audio is playing. ChromeOS 26+
Device not idle when video plays If enabled, this option prevents the device from entering idle mode while video is playing. ChromeOS 26+
Smart dim This setting automatically dims the screen based on user activity. If disabled, screen dimming is unaffected by the smart dim model. ChromeOS 70+
Presentation screen dim delay scale (Available when Smart dim option is disabled) Sets the delay before the screen dims when the device is idle in presentation mode. The value should be greater than 100%. ChromeOS 29+
User activity screen dim delay scale (Available when Smart dim option is disabled) Sets the delay for dimming the screen after user activity. The value should be greater than 100%. ChromeOS 29+
