What is a Zebra Printer, and how is it used?

A Zebra Printer is a printing device that operates on LinkOS, Zebra’s operating system for managing and integrating printers. These printers are designed for high-performance printing of labels, barcodes, receipts, and tags, commonly used in industries such as retail, logistics, healthcare, and manufacturing. Zebra printers are known for their speed and accuracy, making them ideal for tasks that require high-quality print output in demanding environments.

Why enroll a Zebra printer in Hexnode?

Enrolling a Zebra printer in Hexnode allows it to be centrally managed alongside your other enterprise devices. Once enrolled, IT administrators can remotely configure printer settings, apply network and security policies, deploy and monitor the device’s status from the Hexnode console.

How to enroll Zebra printers in Hexnode?

There are two methods available, depending on whether the device requires authentication during the process.

1. Open Enrollment
2. Authenticated Enrollment

Enroll Zebra Printers without authentication (Open Enrollment)

In this method, admins can enroll the Zebra Printers without authentication credentials.

On the Hexnode UEM portal,

1. Navigate to Enroll > Platform-Specific > Zebra Printer > Zebra Printer Enrollment.
2. Choose the authentication mode as Open Enrollment.
3. Choose the Domain. Only users from this domain can be selected as the default user.
4. Choose a default user and click Next.

There are two methods available to enroll a Zebra printer via Open Enrollment:

1. Using Android/iOS device
2. Using Windows device

1. Using Android/iOS device

Before enrollment, an Android or iOS device must be paired with the Zebra printer. Follow the steps below to complete the pairing process.

1. Power on the Zebra Printer and press and hold the Feed button for five seconds until the Bluetooth icon starts blinking on the Zebra printer.
2. Enable Bluetooth on your Android or iOS device, then select the Zebra printer from the available Bluetooth devices list.
3. On your phone, tap “Pair”, and parallelly, press the Select button on the Zebra printer. Once these steps are completed, your Android/iOS device will be successfully paired with the Zebra printer via Bluetooth.
4. Download the Zebra Printer Setup Utility application from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to begin enrolling and managing the paired Zebra printer.
5. Once downloaded, launch the application on your device and tap “Discover Printers.”
6. Select the printer intended for enrollment from the list of detected devices. The printer will be connected to the device, and the power button on the printer will turn green to indicate a successful connection.
Note:


If the printer fails to connect to the mobile device via Bluetooth, press and hold the Feed button for 5 seconds until the Bluetooth icon begins blinking on the Zebra printer, then repeat the steps numbered from 2 to 6.


7. Navigate to Connectivity Settings and configure the printer for a wireless or wired ethernet connection.
8. After configuring, the printer should automatically restart to apply the configuration. If the printer does not restart automatically, perform a manual restart. The printer should connect to the device within a few minutes.
9. Download the required enrollment commands file from the Hexnode UEM portal by navigating to Enroll > Zebra Printer > Zebra Printer Enrollment > Open Enrollment > Android/iOS.
10. Connect the device to the printer, open Available Files, and select the downloaded file. Confirm by selecting Send to Printer.

The printer will restart and will be successfully enrolled in Hexnode.

2. Using Windows device

1. Download the Zebra Printer Setup Utility application from the official Zebra website.
2. After the download is complete, run the Zebra Setup Utilities installer as an administrator. The installer will guide through the basic setup steps and then launch the System Prepare Wizard.
3. In the System Prepare Wizard, connect the Zebra printer to the computer using a USB cable. The required drivers should be detected automatically; however, if they are not, they must be installed manually. Once the printer is successfully installed, it will appear in Zebra Setup Utilities.
4. Select Finish to complete the installation process. The Zebra Setup Utilities application will then open, displaying the newly installed printer in the Printers list.
5. Within Zebra Setup Utilities, select Configure Printer Connectivity to open the Connectivity Setup Wizard. Choose the Wireless Connectivity option and proceed through the wizard steps.
6. The printer should restart automatically once the configuration is applied. If it does not restart automatically, perform a manual restart. The printer should connect to the computer within approximately three minutes.
7. Select Open Communication with Printer button to open the Direct Communication dialog box.
8. Enter the following commands into the dialog box:

The path parameter (path=yourserverURL) in the above command must be replaced with the specific server URL available in the Hexnode UEM portal under Enroll > Zebra Printer > Zebra Printer Enrollment.

9. Click the Send to Printer button to complete the connection of the Zebra wireless printer to the Hexnode portal. It may be necessary to click Send to Printer multiple times. The printer will restart automatically once it receives the configuration.

After successful execution, the printer will be enrolled with Hexnode.

To connect additional printers, return to Zebra Setup Utilities. Connect a new printer via USB and select Refresh Printer List, or choose Install New Printer to manually install a new printer on the computer. Then, repeat the configuration process starting from step 5.

Enroll Zebra Printers with authentication (Authenticated Enrollment)

On the Hexnode UEM portal,

1. Navigate to Enroll > Platform-Specific > Zebra Printer > Zebra Printer Enrollment.
2. Choose the authentication mode as Authenticated Enrollment.
3. Select the enrollment request type as either Local User or Self Enrollment as Local User.
4. Click Next.

A Windows device can be used to enroll a Zebra printer via Authenticated Enrollment.

Using Windows device

The path parameter (path=yourserverURL) in the above command must be replaced with the specific server URL available in the Hexnode UEM portal under Enroll > Zebra Printer > Zebra Printer Enrollment.

The password used for authentication can be set by navigating to Enroll > Settings > Security > Zebra Printer enrollment authentication password.

9. Click the Send to Printer button to complete the connection of the Zebra wireless printer to the Hexnode portal. It may be necessary to click Send to Printer multiple times. The printer will restart automatically once it receives the configuration.

After successful execution, the printer will be enrolled with Hexnode.

To connect additional printers, return to Zebra Setup Utilities. Connect a new printer via USB and select Refresh Printer List, or choose Install New Printer to manually install a new printer on the computer. Then, repeat the configuration process starting from step 5.
