App not updating on supervised iPad after removing block restrictionSolved

Hi everyone!

We removed an app from the block list on a supervised iPad. The restriction is gone, but the app on the device is still on an older version, while the Hexnode portal shows a newer version available. Is there something else we need to do to push the update?

Hi @eliiza .

Removing an app from the block list only allows the app to run on the device. It does not automatically trigger an update. To update the app, you’ll need to manually initiate the installation from the Hexnode portal.

Navigate to Manage > Devices, select the iPad, and choose Actions > Applications > Install Application to deploy the app to the device.

The update behaviour will also depend on how the app was originally deployed and additional factors, such as whether the device is supervised.

Thanks for clarifying. The app was deployed using Apple VPP. Does that change anything?

Yes, it does.

When an app is distributed using Apple VPP (Apps and Books)it can be updated silently on supervised iOS devices, as long as VPP licenses are available and assigned to the device.

If the update does not proceed, please check the availability of VPP licenses in the portal.

Understood. What should we do if there are no VPP licenses available for the app?

In this case, you’ll need to renew the required licenses through Apple Business Manager and sync them with Hexnode. Detailed steps are outlined in our help documentation: How to renew a Volume Purchase Program (VPP) Token?

On our iOS devices, some apps are not VPP. How do updates work for those?

For non-VPP App Store apps, silent installation or updates are still possible on supervised iOS devices, provided the necessary App Store and Apple ID settings are configured.

For example, silent updates can work if:

  • The app is a free App Store app, and

  • The device allows app installation without password prompts, or

  • An Apple ID is already configured on the device.

If these conditions are not met, the update may require user interaction on the device.

For more details, you can refer to our help documentation: Silent app installation without VPP.
