Hello everyone,

I had a question regarding enrollment through Apple Business Manager. I have successfully linked Hexnode to Apple Business Manager (ABM) and assigned my MacBook to the MDM server. It’s showing up in the Hexnode portal under Automated Device Enrollment (ADE), but there hasn’t been any change on the device. What is the next step to officially enroll it?

Hi @sloane,

Typically, ADE enrollment is triggered during the initial Setup Assistant on a new device. For an existing device, you would generally need to perform a factory reset. Once the device restarts, it will reach out to Apple’s activation servers, recognize the Hexnode assignment, and display the Remote Management screen for automatic enrollment. From there, the device will proceed to enroll automatically into Hexnode.

For more information, please refer to the help documentation on ADE enrollment.

Understood. However, this MacBook is already in use and was previously enrolled via an Email/SMS enrollment profile. Is there a way to switch it to ADE without wiping the entire device?

I actually just did this! You don’t necessarily have to wipe it. You can manually force the Mac to check for its ABM assignment using a Terminal command. It worked perfectly for my team.

Hi @sloane,

@otis is spot on. You can manually trigger the enrollment by running the following command in Terminal:

This forces the Mac to check Apple’s servers again and start the remote management enrollment flow if the device is assigned to Hexnode in ABM.

Before attempting to re-enroll your Mac via Terminal, ensure the following requirements are met:

  • The Mac must be running macOS 10.13 or later and have been purchased directly from Apple or an authorized reseller after March 1, 2011.
  • You must be logged in to a local account with administrative privileges to execute the required commands.
  • The device must be properly assigned to the Hexnode MDM server within your organization’s Apple Business Manager (ABM) or Apple School Manager (ASM) portal.
  • The Mac must not have a conflicting management profile from a different MDM solution; any existing profiles must be removed first.
  • Find My Mac must be disabled, or the user must be signed out of iCloud, to ensure the enrollment process isn’t blocked by Activation Lock features.

I’ll try the Terminal command first since I’d prefer not to reset the device. Thanks everyone for the help!
