Unable to update the friendly name or device name in macOSSolved

Hey everyone, I used the rename device action to rename few of my macOS devices. I even checked the update friendly name checkbox. Not only did it not update the device name, but the friendly name is not changing as well, even though I scanned the devices to reflect the changes.

@_janet , I’m not sure if the feature to rename devices is available for Macs.

Is it so? I did not know that. In that case, is there a way to update the friendly name for my Macs at least?

I think it is possible for single devices via remote actions. Just navigate to your device, select Set Friendly Name under Edit from the remote actions (“Actions” button) and enter the name you require. Click proceed and then rename device on the final warning pop-up saying you are about to change the friendly name. The device name should change in the portal for you.

Thanks @jayceon , but can I change for a whole set of devices?

Hey @_janet and @jayceon , the friendly name can be changed for a fleet of devices in two different ways: Set Collective Name or Set Distinctive Names.

Set Collective Name lets you set a single name and append a number to distinguish between devices, e.g. DeviceName-1, DeviceName-2, etc. Wildcards are supported in setting up the device name. Navigate to the Manage tab in your Hexnode UEM portal. Select all the devices that need to be renamed, click on Actions>Edit> Set Friendly Name. The Set Collective Name pop-up screen will be displayed by default. Set your new friendly name and click on Proceed. You will be asked to enter the number of devices to be renamed in the next warning message, enter it and click on Rename Devices. The devices will be renamed with the new name with appended numbers.

Set Distinctive Names lets you set distinct names for all the selected devices. Like setting a collective name, navigate to the Set Friendly Name remote action. In the pop-up screen, select the Set Distinctive Name Tab. Give new names for all the selected devices manually and click on Proceed. You will be asked to give the number of devices to be renamed and then proceed to click on Rename Devices. The devices will be renamed with the new friendly names in the portal.

@elle_reed , I have tried this out, and I have renamed a collective name for a fleet of my devices, according to the department to which the users of the devices belong. It has been very helpful, thank you so much!
