Delay and failure when installing Office apps via .pkg on macOSSolved

Hey everyone,

We’re facing some trouble pushing Outlook for macOS using a .pkg file. The install just sits in “Queued at device end” forever, and after a long wait, it ends up failing with “Failed to update app.”

We tried uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook, which oddly works fine but updates still refuse to go through. Not ideal, since we’d rather not reinstall every time there’s a new version. Anyone else dealing with this?

Hmm, that does sound odd. Are you seeing this only with Outlook, or does it happen with other apps too?

Sometimes .pkg installers behave differently depending on how they’re structured or signed, especially with larger applications. I’m curious if this only affects heavier apps or if it’s happening across the board.

We tested that. Smaller apps like Firefox and Chrome install and update perfectly fine. But the moment we move to Office apps, things get weird.

  • Word → says “Success” and installs fine.
  • PowerPoint → stuck on “Queued at device end,” but it installed and works.
  • Excel → “Queued” forever, doesn’t install or update.

So, it’s not just Outlook but seems more common with the larger Office .pkg files.

Interesting pattern there. Sounds like macOS might be handling those large .pkg installs differently, or maybe it’s just reporting the status inconsistently.

If PowerPoint is installed despite showing “Queued,” that points to a possible reporting mismatch. Still, the delay and failure on Outlook and Excel sound worth digging into. I’d be curious to see if anyone else is getting the same results with big .pkg apps.
