Hi everyone,

We’re managing a set of macOS devices using Hexnode UEM. One of our requirements is to restrict the use of SD cards but still allow users to access USB flash drives.

Is there any way to block only SD cards on macOS while keeping USB storage enabled?

Hello, thank you for reaching out.

On macOS, both SD cards and USB flash drives are categorized as external storage media by Apple’s MDM framework.

Because of this platform-level limitation, it isn’t possible to block SD cards independently while allowing USB flash drives. Any restriction applied to external storage on macOS will apply to all removable storage devices.

Regards,

Clara sterling,

Hexnode UEM.

Got it, that makes sense.

One question, some of our users connect USB devices through USB-C hubs. Is there a way to block the hub itself so that external devices can’t be connected through it?

USB-C hubs act as intermediaries that allow multiple USB devices to connect to a Mac. Apple’s MDM framework does not provide an option to restrict USB-C hubs as a separate hardware category. As a result, Hexnode cannot block hubs individually.

Any storage devices connected through a USB-C hub are still governed by the same external media restrictions configured on the device.
