Android kiosk app flickers on the device endSolved

Hey folks,

I’ve added an app to my Android Kiosk policy, and the screen on the device occasionally flickers. This policy is applied to approximately 100 devices, and all of them are experiencing the same issue. Has anyone faced this before or know a fix?

Thanks for posting! Flickering can happen due to a few reasons, and it’s always good to double-check some key points before applying or updating your Kiosk policy. 

Here are a few things you can review: 

  • Clear app data: From your Hexnode portal, use the Clear App Data remote action for the app in the Kiosk. This helps rule out any old cache or corrupted data.
  •  

  • Run the app outside Kiosk mode: Remove the Kiosk policy applied and open the app normally to check whether the flicker happens only under Kiosk mode.
  •  

  • Peripheral settings: Check if Keep Screen On and Lock Task Mode options are enabled under Kiosk Lockdown → Peripheral Settings. These settings control how the device screen behaves in Kiosk mode.
  •  

  • Try with a different app or device: Apply the same Kiosk setup with another app or on another device. If the flicker doesn’t show up there, it’s likely specific to the app or the device.
  •   

  • Update everything: Make sure both the Hexnode agent and the app itself are up to date. Outdated versions can cause unexpected display behavior.
  •  

Go through these steps and let us know the results. This will help clarify whether the issue is coming from the Kiosk setup or the app itself.

Thanks for the detailed steps! I went through all of them, cleared app data, tested without the policy, even tried on another device and with different settings. The flickering still shows up, but only with this one app.

Hey, jumping in here. We ran into the same issue last month!

We tried everything from changing policies to tweaking settings, and nothing worked until we updated the app itself. Turns out it was an app compatibility issue. The app wasn’t built to run under a Kiosk setup. After updating it, the flicker stopped.

@margaret , since the flickering only happens with that specific app, it is evidently an app-side issue. What you could do is reach out to the app developer to confirm if it’s designed to work under managed or locked-down setups. 

It is always advised to test new apps on a single device first before applying them across your fleet. That way, you can catch these issues early. 

Once the app developer resolves the compatibility issue, you can safely add it back to your Kiosk setup.
