Hi team,

One of our iOS devices has unfortunately been stolen. It had a Hexnode policy applied, and the last check-in was about two hours ago. I can see that the Modify Acc option is restricted, so at least the thief can’t change the iCloud account.

I’m wondering whats the best next steps are here. How do I track the device or protect the data if it doesn’t come back online soon?

Ouch, sorry to hear that. I had a similar case last year. The restriction on modifying the account is a lifesaver because it stops them from removing the device from MDM. In my case, I used Lost Mode to lock it down and display a message on the screen.

Yeah, Lost Mode is the way to go. It basically locks the device and shows whatever contact info you want. If you’re worried about sensitive data, wiping it remotely is also an option. Just depends on whether you want a chance to recover the device or prioritize data protection.

Hi @finn , I completely understand your situation, losing a device can be stressful. Let’s work on resolving this together.

Since  “Modify Account” is restricted, the thief won’t be able to tamper with the iCloud account. To track the device, I recommend enabling Lost Mode. You can do this by navigating to Actions > Security > Enable Lost Mode in the Hexnode portal. Once the device connects to the internet, it will lock down and you’ll be able to track it.

If protecting the data is the priority, you can also choose to wipe the device remotely by going to Actions > Security > Wipe Device.

For Lost Mode instructions: simply go to the device details page in the portal, click on Actions, select Security, and then choose Enable Lost Mode. You’ll be prompted to enter a message and contact number that will display on the device screen.

Please let me know if you face any issues while enabling this , we’ll be happy to assist further.

Regards,
Mary Romero

That’s solid advice. I once put a Return to IT message with our office number in Lost Mode, and surprisingly, someone actually called back. Worth a shot before wiping.

True, but I’m more paranoid. I usually go straight for the wipe option if there’s sensitive data involved.
