Just tried Authenticated guest mode on macos Tahoe, and it’s a major upgrade from the old guest mode. Instead of anonymous logins, users sign in with their Idp account through platform Sso. Sessions are secure, personalized, and still reset automatically after logout. Once logged in, users can immediately access their apps and websites using Sso, which saves a lot of setup time.

Plus, one on that, standard guest sessions were convenient but offered no accountability. Anyone could log in, and we couldn’t control access. Now, each session is linked to a verified identity, giving us visibility while keeping the mac clean after logout. It finally balances security and convenience.

The Tap to login feature adds even more speed. Students can tap their iPhone or Apple watch to the mac using NFC, and credentials are picked up from the secure enclave. Express mode support means no unlocking is needed, so logging in between busy lab sessions is almost instantaneous.

Currently, the Mac needs an external NFC reader for it to work. Once set up, it can detect the credentials stored on the iphone or Apple watch and log the user in instantly.
