Hotspot not working on Samsung devices when web content filtering is appliedSolved

We are experiencing something really weird. We have a bunch of Samsung devices and for some of them the mobile hotspot is enabled. When users try to connect their desktops to that hotspot, they cannot access any websites at all. No internet on the browser.

I did some troubleshooting and figured out it is happening because of the web content filtering policy applied to the device. If the policy is removed, everything works fine.

What on earth is happening here Hexnode?

Mate, hate to break it to you, but you cannot blame Hexnode for this one. I had the exact same issue. I raised it with support and long story short it is not a Hexnode problem. It is actually a Samsung side behaviour.

Hexnode sets some firewall rules on the device for the web content filter to work properly. These firewall rules end up blocking tethering. Samsung knox documentation even mentions that features based on iptables can conflict with tethering.

Here is the reference:

https://docs.samsungknox.com/devref/knox-sdk/reference/com/samsung/android/knox/net/firewall/Firewall.html#:~:text=Warning%3A%20Other%20features%20based%20on%20iptables%20may%20cause%20conflicts%20and%20unexpected%20behaviour%20(e.g.%20Tethering%2C%20VPN%20clients%2C%20B2C%20Firewall

So yeah, it is more like expected behavior unless Samsung decides to change how those rules work.
