Bonjour Multicast restriction on macOS devicesSolved

Hi everyone,

I recently came across a new restriction option called Bonjour Multicast under the macOS restrictions section. It appears to be disabled by default.

Here’s what I noticed – one of our existing policies seems to have been updated automatically with this restriction set to “Disabled,” which ended up blocking certain features that our users regularly rely on. We had to manually enable it again to restore functionality.

I had a couple of questions regarding this:

  1. When a new restriction is introduced, does it automatically impact policies that are already applied to devices?
  2. Is there a way to track when new restrictions or configuration options are added to existing policies?

I’d really appreciate some clarification on this.

Hi @casper,

To answer your first question – this can happen when new restrictions are introduced as part of a product update.

We usually notify customers about these additions through release update emails and newsletters. However, if you’ve opted out of those communications, you might miss these notifications.

If a new restriction could potentially affect device functionality, we make sure to include it in the relevant help documentation and feature release notes as well.

We’ve also taken note of your feedback – we’re working on a way to ensure that newly added features don’t automatically override existing policy configurations.

I hope this clears things up!

Thanks for the detailed explanation, Ben. I also noticed the Bonjour Multicast setting and was curious – could you explain what exactly it is and whether disabling it impacts normal macOS functionality?

Of course, @eliiza!

Bonjour Multicast is Apple’s zero-configuration networking technology. It uses Multicast DNS to let devices on the same local network automatically discover and connect to each other, without requiring manual setup.

It’s what enables macOS devices to seamlessly find printers, AirPlay devices, and shared files across the network.

If this restriction is disabled, devices might lose the ability to automatically detect such shared resources. For instance, users might not see shared printers or AirPlay devices available on the network.

It’s definitely a good idea to review this setting before deploying the restriction to production devices.
