Unable to install appsSolved

Hey all, I have got some Android devices enrolled as Android Enterprise – Device Owner and locked into kiosk mode.
Problem is users can’t install apps. Apparently, they need to add a personal Gmail account to Managed Google Play… but you can only do that from the Managed Play app, which you can’t open because… kiosk mode.

Anyone dealt with this?

Why are you trying to add personal Gmail accounts at all?
That’s not how Device Owner is supposed to work.

Because without it, users can’t install apps themselves. Play Store isn’t visible here.

Hi @elliot,

This is expected behavior with Android Enterprise – Device Owner devices in kiosk mode. In this setup, end users are not meant to sign in to Managed Google Play using personal Gmail accounts. Android restricts personal accounts in Device Owner mode, and the Play Store may be hidden if it’s disabled by policy.

Enabling the Play Store in the Hexnode policy can make the app visible, but it does not mean users should add personal Gmail accounts. Kiosk mode and Android Enterprise restrictions will still limit sign-in and app installation.

The recommended approach is to:

  • Approve apps in Managed Google Play
  • Distribute them via Hexnode
  • Optionally allow Managed Play Store as a kiosk app so users can install

Let us know if that worked for you.
