Switched to authenticated enrollment and now devices won’t auto-assign to default userSolved

Hi all!

I recently switched from open enrollment to authenticated enrollment in Hexnode UEM.

Earlier, devices were enrolling directly and getting assigned to my default user (my email).

Now, when I try to enroll another iPad, the enrollment request goes to my email, and it requires credential verification during setup. I just want this new iPad to be added under the same user account as before. I don’t want to create a new user, and I’d rather not manually send the enrollment link every time. Is there any way around this?

Hi @carter .

Once you switch to Authenticated Enrollment, the process becomes changes. Since your email is configured as the user, the enrollment request will go there, and the system will require verification during enrollment.

If you want devices to enroll directly under the default user without that step, you’d need to switch back to Open Enrollment.

But why does switching the enrollment type change the behaviour like this?

@carter , this behaviour is expected because the enrollment method controls how devices are mapped to users.

With Open Enrollment:

  • Devices enroll using the generic enrollment option.

  • No user credential verification is required.

  • Devices are automatically assigned to the configured default user.

With Authenticated Enrollment:

  • Enrollment is tied to a specific user account.

  • The user must be verified during enrollment using valid credentials (local or directory-based).

  • Only after successful verification is the device assigned to that user.

So, the change you’re seeing is by design.

Hi @isabel_lora ,

One small question — when we change the enrollment type, do the devices that were already enrolled get affected in any way? Or do they just continue as they are?

Hey @diane_

The devices that were already enrolled will not be affected by the change in enrollment type. They will remain assigned to their current user. No additional verification will be triggered automatically. The new enrollment rules apply only to devices being enrolled after the change.
