RMM vs MDM: Do they address the same IT needs?Solved

Hey everyone,

I’ve been coming across the term RMM (Remote Monitoring and Management) quite a bit lately, especially while reading about IT management tools.

How is RMM different from MDM (Mobile Device Management)? At a glance, they seem to do similar things – monitor and manage devices remotely.

Are they basically the same, or do they serve different purposes?

@_janet, The terms do overlap a bit, but they focus on different aspects of device management.

RMM tools are primarily designed for IT service providers (like MSPs) to monitor and maintain entire networks – servers, desktops, laptops, printers, etc. They track system health, deploy patches, and even run scripts to fix issues remotely.

MDM, on the other hand, focuses specifically on mobile endpoints – smartphones, tablets, and sometimes laptops – helping admins control security policies, app installations, and configurations.

So, while both can manage devices remotely, their scope and target audience differ.

Adding to what @mike_johnson said, think of it like this:

  • RMM: Broad IT management Focuses on maintaining all kinds of devices across networks. Used by MSPs and IT teams for proactive system monitoring, patching, and troubleshooting.
  • MDM: Endpoint-level management Focuses on user devices – enforcing compliance, pushing policies, and managing app permissions, especially for mobile and BYOD environments.

RMM often includes some device management features, but MDM provides deeper device management control at the OS and app level.

That’s interesting! So, would it make sense for a company to use both? Or does one replace the other?

@ryanmoore, In many cases, companies actually use both together.

For example, an MSP might use RMM to monitor servers, desktops, and network health, while also using MDM (like Hexnode) to enforce security and configuration policies on mobile devices.

They complement each other – RMM keeps systems healthy, while MDM keeps devices compliant and secure.

Got it, that clears things up! So, in short, RMM handles infrastructure-level management, and MDM focuses on device-level control.

It makes perfect sense now. Thanks for the detailed insights, everyone!
