Location Tracking Disabled on iOS Devices when Hexnode UEM App is not installedSolved

Hi everyone, I’m running into an issue with location tracking on newly deployed iPhones. In the Hexnode portal, the devices show as online, but under Recent Location it says, “Location Tracking Disabled as UEM app is not installed.”

Has anyone else seen this? I just want to confirm if this is expected or if I’m missing a step during deployment.

Yes, we’re seeing the exact same thing on our end. The devices are enrolled via ADE and show as compliant, but location still doesn’t update. I initially thought it was a network issue, but now I’m not so sure.

Hi @merlynn and @ace_98 , thanks for bringing this up.

Even though the device is enrolled and appears online in the Hexnode UEM portal, iOS requires the Hexnode UEM app to be installed on the device to relay GPS-based location data.

If the app is not present, Hexnode cannot fetch recent or live location details, which is why you see the message “Location Tracking Disabled as UEM app is not installed.”

Here’s how you can install Hexnode UEM app:

  1. Add the Hexnode UEM app to Inventory
    • Go to Apps+ Add AppsStore AppiOS.
    • Search for Hexnode UEM and add it to your inventory.
  2. Deploy the app using a Policy
    • Navigate to Policies New PolicyiOS
    • Open Required Apps and add the Hexnode UEM app
    • Associate this policy with the required devices or device groups

Once the app is installed and location permissions are granted, the device will start reporting location data normally.

Regards,
Clara sterling,
Hexnode UEM.

Got it. Is there any other way to push the Hexnode UEM app remotely without asking users to log in with an Apple ID?

Yes, you can silently deploy the Hexnode UEM app using Apple’s Volume Purchase Program (VPP).

  • Ensure VPP licenses are assigned under AdminApple Business ManagerApple VPP.
  • With VPP licenses in place, the app installs automatically without prompting the user for an Apple ID.

That clears it up for us as well. We’ll push the app via policy and test it on a few devices. Thanks for the clear explanation!
