Is there a way to let users approve the restart after macOS updates?Solved

Hey everyone, we manage a fleet of Macs using Hexnode UEM, and we try to keep updates under control, so users don’t get interrupted while working. Most of our employees have critical work running on their machines, so sudden restarts are a real problem.

We prefer manual update installation and want to avoid automatic restarts. Ideally, updates should install only when convenient, and restarts should happen only after user approval.

Is there a way in Hexnode to make updates wait for user confirmation before restarting the Mac?

Thank you for reaching out, @vance_j Using Manual Patch in Hexnode UEM, you can schedule when macOS updates are installed across devices, helping administrators keep systems up to date while controlling timing.

However, Manual Patch currently does not support enforcing a workflow where the update installs and waits for explicit user approval before restarting.

What you can do is:

  • Schedule updates during a maintenance window.

  • Configure user notifications so employees know an update is pending.

This approach gives users time to save ongoing work and reduces disruption, even though Hexnode cannot enforce a user-approved restart.

But how can we schedule the notifications for users?

You can automate the Broadcast Message action to notify usersThis notification will inform them that a macOS update is pending or scheduled to install, so they can save their work before the update occurs.

Here’s how:

  1. Navigate to Automate > New Automation > macOS > Alerts.

  1. Select Broadcast Message and type the message you want users to receive about the OS update.

  1. Set the time (when the notification will be sent to the users) in the Settings and Schedule.

  1. Configure the Target Filters.

  1. Review the automation and click Save

Tip: Schedule the broadcast message a few hours before the update so users have time to save their work.
