Hi all, we’re dealing with a massive fleet of devices and want to automate the hardware refresh and decommissioning workflow. Right now, it’s all manual and super error-prone. Anyone using Hexnode for this? How do you structure it?

Absolutely! You can fully automate the end-of-life (EOL) transition. The workflow usually follows four phases:

  1. Eligibility & Forecasting: Hexnode flags devices hitting their EOL using enrollment date or license activation date.

  1. User-Driven Migration: Users get a “side-by-side” period with the old and new device. Policies can restrict old devices to read-only to speed up migration.

  1. Secure Remote Decommissioning: Once the new device is live, Hexnode triggers OS-native wipes (Windows Reset, macOS Erase All Content, Android Factory Reset) and optional block-level storage purge.

  1. ITAD Handshake & Asset Retirement: Devices are shipped back, scanned, and retired in Hexnode with full audit trails.

That sounds solid. What about minimizing downtime? Can the user migrate without waiting for IT to manually approve each device?

Yes! Hexnode can automatically detect when the new device is operational and then start the Terminal Sequence on the old device. Users just need to complete the sync to the cloud during the 5-day overlap. You get zero tech touch per device in a well-set-up workflow.

That’s cool. So do you also track device health for deciding refresh cycles?

Exactly. Hexnode’s Device Reports track battery information, disk wear, and other attributes. You can even create custom scoring using Hexnode Custom Attributes to decide if a device should retire early or wait for another cycle.
