Device note gets truncated in HexnodeSolved

Hey guys,

Running into a strange issue here. We use the API to update device attributes for enrolled devices in Hexnode. On a few devices, when we update the device notes, the content gets cut off midway. Some of the text just disappears.

Has anyone seen this before or knows what might be causing it?

Hey,

Quick check: have you tried updating the same device note directly from the Hexnode portal instead of the Api? That might help narrow it down.

From what I remember, the device notes field has a character limit. If the payload crosses that limit, the extra text might be getting dropped.

@luuk, yep, that’s exactly what’s happening.

Device notes in Hexnode are capped at 300 characters. When you update notes through the API, it might not throw an error. Anything beyond the limit just gets truncated silently.

If you try the same update from the portal, you’ll actually see an error message:

Device note character limit exceeded error in Hexnode UEM

Ah, that explains it. I did think about a character limit but didn’t fully connect it at the time. Since the API calls were succeeding, I assumed something else was wrong.

Thanks for clearing it up, @elena and @pepijn
