Cannot find Google Chrome under store apps for deployment + configs?Solved

Hey everyone,

We are onboarding a new batch of MacBooks for our Marketing department next week, and I’m currently setting up the Hexnode policies for their device group.

My goal is to deploy Google Chrome to all these machines and push a few managed configurations along with it (specifically, setting the default homepage to our company intranet and forcing a couple of required CRM extensions).

However, when I go to add the app to the policy, Google Chrome just isn’t showing up under the “Store Apps” section. I’ve refreshed the VPP sync and searched multiple times, but it’s completely missing. I know it’s a standard app, so I’m really confused as to why I can’t find it.

Am I missing a step here? How is everyone else deploying Chrome and its configurations to their macOS fleets? Any advice would be hugely appreciated!

Hey man,

The reason you can’t find it is that Google Chrome actually isn’t distributed through the official Apple Mac App Store. Because it’s not a standard App Store app, Hexnode won’t be able to pull it into that specific “Store Apps” list.

To get this working, you just need to add it manually as an Enterprise App. Here is the standard workflow we use for our fleet:

  1. Download the Installer: Head over to Google’s Enterprise website and download the Chrome Enterprise installer. Make sure you grab the .pkg or .dmg file for macOS.
  2. Add to Inventory: Go to your Hexnode portal and navigate to Apps > App Inventory.
  3. Upload: Click on Add App > Enterprise App, fill in the basic details, and upload the Chrome package you just downloaded.
  4. Deploy: Once the upload finishes processing, head back to your deployment policy. You will now be able to select Chrome, but you’ll find it under the Enterprise Apps list instead of Store Apps!

For the configurations you mentioned (homepage, extensions), you can just upload your custom .plist file under the App Configurations section of that same policy once the app is added.

Hope this helps get your Marketing team up and running!
