App update issueSolved

Hi, we are managing Android (Device Owner) devices with basic policies that restrict app installs by users. However, we got an issue where users are unable to update preloaded apps like Google Photos, they see a message saying updates are blocked by admin restrictions.

We are not using kiosk mode, and I don’t see any advanced restrictions configured.
Has anyone run into this?

We saw something similar in our environment. In our case, updates were blocked when Play Store access was restricted indirectly, even though it didn’t look obvious in the policy.

Hi @leo_scott, thanks for reaching out to us.

For Android Enterprise – Device Owner devices, system apps auto-update by default.

Even when only basic restrictions are applied, please confirm the following:

  • Whether Google Play Store is present on the device
  • Whether any application allowlist/blocklist are configured in the Hexnode portal

That’s where we are stuck, we only see Basic Restrictions, no Advanced Restrictions at all.

Also, we don’t have physical access to the devices. These are deployed remotely, so we will need to instruct our field techs on what to check.

Hi, you can check this remotely by navigating to Manage > Devices > Select the device > Applications sub-tab on Hexnode UEM portal.

Search for Google Play Store in the app list and confirm whether it’s present, or missing.

We checked the Applications tab, and Google Play Store is not listed at all for the affected devices.

That would explain why users can’t update Google Photos or other system apps.

I’ll add Play Store back to the devices.

Thanks, everyone!
