allowlisted websites not working on windows web content filteringSolved

Hey everyone, I’m running into something odd with Web Content Filtering on our Windows devices. I’ve got a policy with a bunch of configurations bundled together, including an allowlist for specific websites.

I am seeing a discrepancy where some allowlisted sites work perfectly, but others don’t.

For example, I allowlisted www.gmail.com, but when a user tries to access it, the browser still shows it as blocked.

Is this something on Hexnode’s side or am I missing something here?

Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to Hexnode Connect. The behavior you’re seeing is actually expected and not an issue. Some websites don’t stay on the exact URL you type in; they automatically redirect to a different address.

For example, http://www.gmail.com redirects to mail.google.com. Some URLs like docs.google.com can redirect based on region, domain, or login status

When this happens, the redirected URL needs to be added to the allowlist as well. If it isn’t, the system only sees the final destination URL, and blocks it because it’s not in the list.

So in your case, adding mail.google.com to the allowlist should fix Gmail access across all three browsers.

Feel free to reach out again if you have more URLs behaving the same way or need help verifying redirects, happy to assist anytime.

Best regards,
George
