Hey everyone, I’m trying to get a bit more control over some default iOS apps. Is there a way to convert system apps into managed apps so they can be handled like the rest?

@leo_scott, the short answer — no, that’s not something iOS allows. System apps (like Safari, Camera, Messages, etc.) are part of the OS and are not installed via MDM or the App Store. Because of that, they can’t be converted into managed apps or brought under the same management scope as apps deployed through MDM.

Got it. I mainly want to either restrict access to some of these apps or control how they behave. What are my options here?

That makes sense, and this is where iOS gives you a few practical alternatives depending on what you’re aiming for:

  • If the goal is restricting usage, you can block or limit access to specific system apps using restrictions.

  • If you’re trying to control behavior, certain apps like Safari can be configured using policies (for example, managing allowed websites or browser settings).

  • Or if you need stricter control, especially for dedicated or corporate-owned devices, kiosk mode can be used to allow only specific apps and effectively keep system apps out of reach.

So while system apps can’t be managed like regular apps, you still have solid control over how they’re accessed and used.
