Hi everyone, I want to set a custom screensaver image on macOS devices using Hexnode. Is that possible?

Hi @alice_grey !

Yes, this can be done using a custom script deployed through Hexnode. The script allows you to point the screensaver to the image you want to use.

For step-by-step instructions, you can refer to our help documentation:

Script to set screen saver on Mac.

Thanks! I’ll try that on macOS.

I have one more question—can I add a custom animation file as a screensaver on a Windows device?

Yes, @alice_grey . Here’s how you can set a custom animation as a screensaver on Windows using Hexnode:

  1. Log in to your Hexnode UEM portal.
  2. Create a new policy for Windows screensaver settings.
  3. Go to Configurations > Screensaver and enable the screensaver option.
  4. Choose Custom from the screensaver dropdown.
  5. Upload your file or select one from the uploaded list.
  6. Configure other settings as required.
  7. Apply the policy to your target devices.

Just keep in mind—only files in .scr format can be used as a custom screensaver on Windows.

Okay, but what’s the difference between a normal image and a .scr file?

Good question @alice_grey ! This is something that often causes confusion.

A JPG or PNG is just an image. You can view it or use it as wallpaper, but it can’t “run” when the system goes idle.

A .scr file, on the other hand, is an actual screensaver program. Windows treats it like a small app that starts automatically when the device is inactive and controls what shows up on the screen—animations, slideshows, or images.

So when you upload a custom screensaver through Hexnode, it needs to be a .scr file because that’s what Windows recognizes as a real screensaver.
