Linux kiosk mode in HexnodeSolved

Hey everyone, we are trying something a bit different at our schools, we are looking to roll out Linux devices to students instead of the usual Chromebooks. I know it’s not the typical choice, but we’re exploring new options. Anyone here used kiosk mode on Linux, and how to configure it?

Hi there! We recently tried the kiosk mode on Linux, both single app and multi app. Definitely worth checking out if you’re handing out devices and need to control what users can access.

Hello @penelope, welcome to Hexnode Connect!

As @akemi mentioned, Hexnode supports two kiosk modes for Linux devices: Single App Kiosk and Multi App Kiosk.

To configure single/multi app kiosk mode on a Linux device, follow the steps below:

  1. On your Hexnode UEM console, navigate to the Policies tab.
  2. Click New Policy to create a new one, or select an existing policy.
  3. Provide a name and, optionally, a description for the policy.
  4. Go to Kiosk Lockdown > Linux Kiosk Lockdown, and choose either Single App or Multi App, depending on your requirement.
  5. Click Configure to set up the kiosk environment.
  6. Once configured, associate the policy with the target devices.

A few points to remember,

  • A local user account must be created on the Linux device to serve as the kiosk account.
  • The application(s) intended for kiosk mode must be already installed on the device.
  • Applications added to kiosk mode will appear as desktop shortcuts. Note that users can delete these shortcuts; if this occurs, logging out and logging back in will automatically restore them.

For more information, check out our help documentation on Single App Kiosk and Multi App Kiosk on Linux.

@penelope If you don’t mind me asking, what made you choose Linux over Chromebooks?

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

@skylar-a We feel Ubuntu gives us more flexibility and control, especially when it comes to software installation and system management. We also want to foster a more open-source approach in our schools. That’s why we’re giving Linux a try!
