How to clear password for Android device?Solved

Hey everyone, I’m in a bit of a bind with one of our Android devices. The device is currently stuck on the lock screen showing: Too many incorrect unlock attempts. Try again in… and the lockout timer is reaching several hours.

The device is enrolled in the “Device Owner” mode in Hexnode UEM. Is there any way to get the user back in without performing a factory reset? I really need to avoid wiping the local data.

@merlynn , I have a few Samsung tablets in the field that occasionally run into this same issue when users forget their patterns.

Hello  @merlynn  and  @sammyy . You can resolve the forgotten password issue on Android devices using the Clear Password remote action in your Hexnode console. This action is designed specifically to bypass lockout timers and remove forgotten credentials.
Steps to resolve:

  1. Go to the Manage tab in your Hexnode portal.
  2. Click on the name of the locked Android device to go to the Device Summary page.
  3. Click Actions and select Clear Password.

Important Note: For this action to work, the device must have an active internet connection to receive the command. Once the command is received, the current screen lock (PIN, Pattern, or Password) will be stripped away, allowing the user to bypass the “Too many attempts” screen and enter the home screen immediately.

Elle Reed,

@elle_reed , thank you! I just triggered the action. It worked – the lockout screen vanished, and I’m looking at the home screen now. Quick follow-up: Does this work on all Android versions?

@merlynn  The action works only on devices with Android version 7.0+ enrolled in Hexnode UEM using Android Enterprise. In Device Owner management mode, as mentioned earlier, the Clear Password action will instantly remove the password of the device. In Profile Owner management mode, the Work Profile password is only removed, and the personal side password remains unaffected.

Exactly. Just a reminder: once the device is unlocked, ensure to set up a new passcode so the device remains compliant with your organization’s security policy.
