iOS App Catalog: Microsoft Excel and Word VPP apps not showing on iPadSolved

Hi,

I’m using the Hexnode App Catalog for iPads and noticed that Microsoft Excel and Word were not showing up for a user. These apps were purchased through Apple Business Manager and added to Hexnode earlier.

I recently removed the older entries and added what looked like newer versions because the Excel and Word icons seemed different. Later I realized the new Excel entry I added was for Android, so I added the old iOS version back.

A couple of questions:

  1. Does Hexnode automatically hide or uncheck platforms like Android if we only use iOS devices?
  2. If a user installs Excel from the Hexnode App Catalog, do they get the latest App Store version?
  3. Can VPP apps installed on iPads be updated automatically when a new version is available?

Hi @astrid-,

For public store apps added to the Hexnode App Catalog, the platform selection is manual. Hexnode does not automatically uncheck unused platforms such as Android based on the devices currently enrolled in the portal.

When adding Microsoft Excel, Word, or any other public App Store app to the App Catalog, make sure the iOS platform entry is selected. If an Android-only entry is added, it will not appear on iPads.

For your other questions:

  • Apps downloaded from the Hexnode App Catalog are pulled directly from the Apple App Store, so users receive the latest version available in the App Store at the time of installation.
  • For VPP apps, devices can receive update notifications when newer versions are available.
  • If you want Hexnode to deploy app updates automatically, deploy the app as a Required App through a policy and associate the policy with the required iOS devices.

Hexnode checks for VPP app updates from the App Store daily at 7:00 AM UTC. If updates are found, they are deployed to assigned devices at 10:00 AM UTC.

Update behavior depends on device supervision:

  • Supervised iOS devices: updates install automatically without user approval.
  • Unsupervised iOS devices: the user is prompted to approve and install the update.
