iOS VPP app from Apple Business Manager fails to install when app installation restrictions are enabledSolved

I assigned a WhatsApp license through Apple Business and tried deploying it to an iOS device through Hexnode, but the app installation action kept failing on the device profile.

The app is available as a VPP app in Hexnode, so I don’t think it’s a license sync issue. I also want to prevent users from downloading their own apps from the App Store. Could that restriction interfere with managed app installation?

Yes, iOS app installation restrictions can affect how apps are installed or made available on managed devices.

For a VPP app purchased through Apple Business Manager and deployed from Hexnode, check the restriction policy associated with the device:

  1. Go to Policies.
  2. Open the policy applied to the device.
  3. Navigate to Restrictions.
  4. Review the Install Applications restriction.
  5. Also check Advanced Restrictions and review Install apps from App Store.
  6. Save the policy and retry the app installation action. If the goal is to prevent users from installing their own apps, you can disable user-initiated app installation from these restriction settings. After updating the restriction policy, retry deploying the managed VPP app from Hexnode.

One more thing to consider: if you want to stop users from signing in with a personal Apple Account and installing apps that way, disable Modify an account under Advanced Restrictions. This prevents users from adding or changing Apple Account details on the device, which helps block personal App Store app installs.
