VPP app install action not working on iOS deviceSolved

I tried using Actions > Install Application on an iOS device, but the app did not install. The device was showing as non-compliant because a required app was missing. The phone was online and in hand, but the activity feed took a while to update, so I wasn’t sure if the install command was delayed or if the device wasn’t checking in.

Is there a way to force the device to check in from the phone? Also, if this turns out to be a VPP license issue, can Hexnode warn admins when Apple VPP licenses are running low or hit zero?

Hi @ren_ben,

For the Install Application action to complete, the device must be actively checking in with Hexnode and have a stable internet connection.

To force a check-in from the phone, open the Hexnode UEM app on the device and use the Sync option if available. You can also go to Manage > select the device > Actions > Scanning & Monitoring > Scan Device from the Hexnode portal, restart the device, or switch to a different network.

Regarding proactive alerts for low or depleted VPP licenses, this is currently a feature enhancement request. The current workaround is to periodically monitor the available VPP license count for managed apps in the portal.

To check if this is the issue, go to Manage > select the device > Action History to see the status of the Install Application action. If there is an information (i) icon next to the failed action, click it to see if the failure is related to unavailable or exhausted VPP licenses.

That was it. The info icon in Action History showed the issue, and we had used up all our VPP licenses for that app. The device and network were fine; the install was failing because there were no licenses left to assign.

After adding more licenses in Apple Business, do I need to sync anything in Hexnode before retrying the install?

Yes. After purchasing or assigning additional licenses in Apple Business, sync the VPP/Apple Business account in Hexnode so the updated license count is reflected in the portal.

Once the new license count appears in Hexnode, retry the Install Application action or allow the app policy to apply again automatically during the next device check-in. For future troubleshooting, Action History remains the best place to verify whether an app install command is pending, completed, or failed due to a deployment condition.
