iCloud Backup grayed out on supervised iPhone with Managed Apple IDSolved

I’m setting up a supervised iPhone enrolled through Apple Business Manager, and the iCloud Backup option is disabled. The “Back Up This iPhone” switch is grayed out. The device is signed in with a Managed Apple ID. In the assigned iOS security policy, iOS > Restrictions > Allow iCloud Settings > Backup is enabled. The only other assigned policy is the default compliance policy. Other supervised iPhones with Managed Apple IDs in the same setup can use iCloud Backup, so I don’t think this is a general Managed Apple ID limitation. Is there a way to correct this without unenrolling or wiping the device?

For a supervised iPhone, the iCloud Backup toggle can remain grayed out if an account-related restriction or a stale MDM restriction payload is still active on the device. Since the Hexnode policy already allows iCloud Backup, check these items:

  1. On the iPhone, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  2. If Content & Privacy Restrictions is enabled, open Account Changes and set it to Allow.
  3. In Hexnode, open the assigned iOS policy.
  4. Go to iOS > Advanced Restrictions > Allow Security and Privacy Settings.
  5. Make sure Modify an account is enabled.
  6. Go to iOS > Restrictions > Allow iCloud Settings and confirm that Backup is allowed.

If all of these are already configured correctly, re-save the assigned policy to force a fresh policy sync: 1. Open the assigned policy in Hexnode.

2. Click Manage > Modify.

3. Save the policy without making changes.

4. Wait for the policy action to show as Success on the device.

5. Restart the iPhone and check the iCloud Backup toggle again.

This should not require unenrolling or wiping the device.

I checked Screen Time and Account Changes was already allowed. In Hexnode, Modify an account is also enabled and Backup is allowed under iCloud settings. The toggle is still grayed out though. Is restarting the phone enough at this point?

Restarting is recommended after forcing the policy sync. If the same configuration works on other iPhones, the issue is likely with the restriction state on that specific device rather than the policy design.

Re-save the policy first, confirm that the policy action completed successfully for the device, and then reboot the iPhone. After the restart, check Settings > Apple ID > iCloud > iCloud Backup again.
