I’m trying to remote wipe a supervised iPad from Hexnode. The device is powered on, connected to the internet, and it checked in recently, but the wipe did not start for a few hours.

In Action History, the wipe failed with this message: “The device could not be wiped due to the following reasons: Activation Lock was not enabled on the device, or Clear Activation Lock failed due to a server error. Device does not support Clear Activation Lock feature”

Has anyone seen this before? I just need the iPad to reset.

This can happen when the wipe command is submitted together with the option to clear Apple Activation Lock. If Hexnode cannot complete the Activation Lock clearance check, the wipe action may fail before the actual erase command is sent. To send only the standard wipe command:

  1. Go to Manage and select the iPad.
  2. Click Actions > Wipe Device.
  3. In the confirmation prompt, uncheck Clear Factory Reset Protection/Activation Lock.
  4. Enter the required password and confirm the action.

This sends the wipe command without waiting for the Activation Lock clearance step. Note that this does not clear Activation Lock. If Activation Lock is enabled on the device, it may still need to be handled separately after the reset.

I tried that on a supervised iPad. Hexnode seemed to freeze for a bit, and the device stopped checking in for around 10 minutes. The action also didn’t appear to go through the first time.

A short delay can occur while the command is being queued and the device checks in again. If the wipe action does not appear in Action History after the portal responds, retry the wipe with the Activation Lock option unchecked. Once the command is accepted, the action status should change to Pending, and the iPad should begin resetting when it receives the command.
