iOS required apps: Is it safe to assign both original and cloned policies to the same device?Solved

I have an iPhone assigned to an existing policy. Some apps were not updating automatically, so I cloned the policy and added those apps as Required Apps in the cloned policy.

If I assign both the original policy and the cloned policy to the same iOS device, will that cause any issues? I want to avoid app downtime or users having to sign in again.

During testing, I noticed that when I removed one of the policies, the app was deleted and then reinstalled because it was still present in the cloned policy. I’m trying to avoid that kind of disruption.

Hi @pepijn,

Assigning multiple policies to the same device is supported in Hexnode. The final behavior depends on the type of configurations included in those policies.

In general:

– If the policies configure different items, they are applied together.
– If there is a conflict between restrictions, the most restrictive setting is enforced.
– For settings where only one value can be active, the most recently applied or updated configuration may take effect.

However, assigning two very similar policies can become difficult to manage and may lead to unexpected behavior if both policies contain overlapping payloads.

In your case, the app deletion during testing is likely related to the Required Apps setting called “Remove App on Policy Removal.” If this option is enabled, Hexnode removes the app when the policy that installed or managed it is removed. Since the cloned policy still contains the app, it may then reinstall the app again.

To avoid app removal when disassociating a policy, disable “Remove App on Policy Removal” for the app under Required Apps and save the policy before removing the policy from the device.

Thanks, one more thing — if I add these apps as Required Apps on an iPhone that is not in kiosk mode, will Hexnode handle app updates automatically? The original problem was that the user had to update those apps manually.

Hi @pepijn,

For iOS devices that are not in kiosk mode, apps added through the Required Apps policy can be managed by Hexnode for deployment and updates. Once the apps are included as Required Apps, Hexnode will manage updates to the latest available version, which should prevent the user from having to update those apps manually.
