macOS location tracking says policy not enabled and only works after opening Hexnode appSolved

I’m having trouble with location tracking on a managed Mac. Location Services is enabled on macOS, the location tracking policy is assigned, but when I try to fetch the device location from Hexnode, it fails with “Could not fetch the location of the device. Please try again.”

The odd part is that manual location sending from the Hexnode UEM app works sometimes, but automatic location tracking does not seem to run consistently. At one point the Mac showed that the location tracking policy was not enabled even though it was assigned from the portal.

Has anyone seen this on macOS where location tracking only starts working after manually opening the Hexnode UEM app?

Hello @ruthg ,

For macOS location tracking to work through Hexnode UEM, verify the following first:

  1. The Mac should be running macOS 10.11 or later.
  2. The Hexnode UEM app should be installed on the Mac.
  3. Location permission should be granted for the Hexnode UEM app under macOS Location Services.
  4. A policy with Location tracking enabled should be associated with the device.
  5. Wi-Fi should be enabled on the Mac, even if the device is connected through Ethernet.

If all of these are already configured but the device still shows that the location tracking policy is not enabled, remove the location tracking policy from the device, save the change, then re-associate the policy and save it again. Restart the Mac after reassociation and check whether the location can be fetched. This can help if the device did not properly sync the location tracking policy state.

Regards,
Hexnode UEM

Reassociating the policy made it work for a while. After that, it failed again. IP-based location works, but I don’t want to rely on IP-based location. If I open the Hexnode UEM app on the Mac manually, the location can be sent.

If the location updates resume only after opening the Hexnode UEM app, it usually points to the app/service not running correctly in the background or macOS not allowing the app to access Location Services consistently.

In this case, keep the following in mind:

  • Wi-Fi should remain enabled because macOS location lookup depends on Wi-Fi positioning, even when Ethernet is used.
  • If opening the Hexnode UEM app manually immediately restores location reporting, monitor whether the background service stops again after reboot or idle time.

If the issue repeats consistently after these checks, it should be investigated further as a service/background execution issue on that Mac.
