Is using Apple Configurator a good option to enroll an iPhone in Hexnode for full supervisionSolved

I’m setting up iPhones in Hexnode and wanted to confirm the right enrollment method. I know the basic enrollment can be done from Safari using the enrollment URL or QR code, but we need more control over the iOS devices. Would Apple Configurator be the right option for this?

Yes, absolutely @jaxon_r.

Apple Configurator is the correct tool to use if you require full supervision and advanced control over your iPhones.

While the basic Safari-based enrollment (via URL or QR code) is convenient, it only applies a standard MDM profile. It does not supervise the device. Supervision is what unlocks Hexnode’s most powerful management capabilities, such as:

  • Locking devices into single-app or multi-app Kiosk Mode.
  • Preventing users from removing the MDM management profile.
  • Silently pushing and updating apps without user intervention.
  • Enforcing strict hardware restrictions (e.g., disabling the camera, FaceTime, or the App Store).

Keep in mind that supervising a device via Apple Configurator requires a Mac and will require the iPhone to be factory reset during the preparation process.

Oh, I see. I initially thought using Apple Configurator would be a quick and simple fix. But we actually have over 100 devices to manage, so having to physically connect each one to a Mac and do a factory reset is going to become incredibly hectic. Is there another method we can use to enroll and supervise these devices without all this manual hassle?

Yes @jaxon_r .

For large-scale deployments like yours, you can use Apple Business paired with Automated Device Enrollment (ADE).

With ADE, you get a completely hands-off, wireless approach:

  • Zero-Touch Deployment: Devices are automatically forced into a supervised state the very first time they are turned on, straight out of the box.
  • No Physical Tethering: You don’t need a Mac, cables, or any physical interaction from your IT team.
  • Over-the-Air Setup: The management profile is applied automatically over the internet, saving your team from that hectic manual workflow.

Here is the detailed document below outlining the step-by-step process for Automated Device Enrollment to help you get started with the setup.
