iPads not showing Remote Management during Apple Business Manager ADE enrollmentSolved

I’m enrolling a batch of iPads through Apple Business Manager and Hexnode. The devices were assigned to the Hexnode MDM server in ABM, then erased and reset. During setup, after connecting to Wi-Fi, I expected the iPads to detect the Hexnode management profile and continue with enrollment, but the Remote Management screen did not appear. These are not brand-new devices. They are being moved from another MDM/certificate provider, so I’m trying to factory reset and enroll them into Hexnode through Automated Device Enrollment. Is there a specific order for syncing ADE and resetting the iPads?

For Automated Device Enrollment through Apple Business Manager, the device must be available in Hexnode before it is activated after a factory reset. Check the following in the Hexnode portal:

  1. Go to Admin > Apple Business/School Manager > Automated Device Enrollment > Devices.
  2. Confirm that the iPad is listed there.
  3. Confirm that the enrollment profile status shows as assigned or pushed.
  4. If the device is not listed, select Manage and run Sync with ADE from the same section.

After the device is listed in Hexnode and the ADE profile is assigned, erase the iPad again and proceed through Setup Assistant. Once it connects to the internet during setup, the Remote Management screen should appear, and the device will enroll automatically into Hexnode.

That explains what I was seeing. I had already reset a few iPads before running the ADE sync in Hexnode. After syncing, the devices showed up under Automated Device Enrollment and the profile showed as assigned, but the ones I had already started did not immediately pick up the management profile.

If the iPad has already passed activation or completed Setup Assistant before the ADE sync/profile assignment was in place, it will not automatically switch into ADE enrollment afterward. For those devices, erase them again after confirming they are listed under Automated Device Enrollment in Hexnode with the profile assigned. On the iPad, use: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Erase All Content and Settings. During the next setup, connect to Wi-Fi and continue. The Remote Management screen should appear. After accepting it, the iPad will enroll and later appear under the Manage tab in Hexnode.
