iOS VPP app update failed with “User is already being prompted”Solved

I’m deploying iPhone apps through app groups assigned to Required App policies. The devices are enrolled through Apple Business Manager, and the apps are VPP apps.

A couple of things I’m trying to understand:

  1. How often do these apps update on the devices?
  2. How can I verify whether a VPP/ABM app update is reflected in Hexnode?
  3. For one app update, Action History shows Failed with the message “user is already being prompted.” What does that mean?

Hi @r_foster,

For iOS apps deployed through a Required App policy, Hexnode checks for available app updates when the device scans in. If an update is available in the App Store and the app record is reflected in the Hexnode app repository, the update is pushed to the device during the next applicable device scan.

For VPP apps synced from Apple Business, you can verify the app record from the Apps tab in Hexnode. Search for the app there and check whether the latest app information is reflected after the VPP app has been updated on Apple’s side.

The Action History message “user is already being prompted” means iOS has already displayed an app installation or update prompt on the device, and the device is waiting for the user to respond. While that prompt is still active, another install/update request for the same app may fail because the device is already handling the prompt.

To recover from this state:

  1. Ask the device user to respond to the install/update prompt if it is visible.
  2. If the prompt was dismissed or timed out, retry the app push from Hexnode using Actions > Install Application.
  3. If the issue repeats, check the VPP license count for the app under Apps > search for the app name, and confirm that enough licenses are available.

I retried it using Actions > Install Application and the app pushed successfully. So does that mean nothing was wrong with the policy?

Yes @r_foster, if the retry succeeded, the Required App policy and app assignment were likely fine. The earlier failure usually indicates that the device had an active iOS prompt at that moment, or the previous prompt was not completed before the action timed out.

This can happen with VPP app installs or updates depending on how iOS handles the app prompt on the device. Retrying the Install Application action sends the install/update request again, which is why it completed successfully once the device accepted or reprocessed it.

If the same app continues to fail across multiple devices, then it is worth checking VPP license availability in the Apps tab. But a one-time success after retry generally points to a pending prompt rather than a broken deployment configuration.
