Help with File explorer settings – WindowsSolved

Hi everyone,

Is the File Explorer setting under Advanced Restrictions fully available for the Windows platform? We are currently deploying several Windows 11 devices for our inventory clerks and we are trying to lock down their access.

Our goal is to restrict file access by specifying a custom file path so employees can only open the exact folder they need for their daily tasks. Ideally, I want to define a specific file path like *C:\Corporate\InventoryData* for the allowed folder. However, I can’t seem to send a file using the action tab, and the file explorer tab also appears to be missing on my end.

Can we use a specific custom file path for the allowed folder on Windows? Could someone explain what exactly this policy does? Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Hexnode Connect.

Currently, we will not be able to restrict a user strictly to a custom file path like the one you mentioned. The working behavior here is a bit different from what you might have anticipated.

The settings found under File Explorer in Advanced Restrictions are instead designed to provide minimal file access by limiting users only to specified general locations on the device. When you configure policies like Allowed folder locations or Allowed storage locations for Windows, you are restricting the file explorer to general system paths. You will be presented with predefined options, allowing you to restrict users to hubs like Documents, Pictures, and Downloads, or limit storage access to broadly defined areas like Removable drives or Local drives.

Regarding the missing action tabs for sending files and the missing file explorer tab, those specific remote file management utilities are not available for the Windows platform, which is why they are not visible on your portal when managing these devices.

I hope this helps. If you find any more issues or need further assistance feel free to reach out.
