Can Hexnode limit bandwidth per app on Android kiosk devices?Solved

We’re managing Android devices in kiosk mode and want to control data usage for individual apps. For example, limit Facebook to a certain amount per day, Gmail to another amount, and so on. Is there a Hexnode policy that can set bandwidth or daily data limits per installed app in kiosk mode?

Hexnode does not currently support restricting bandwidth or setting data usage limits for individual apps on Android kiosk devices. As an alternative, you can configure an overall data usage cap for the device:

  1. Go to Policies.
  2. Create or edit an Android policy.
  3. Navigate to Android > Network Data Usage Management.
  4. Configure the required daily or monthly data usage limits for the device.
  5. Associate the policy with the target Android devices.

For app-level visibility, you can use App Usage Management to track app usage and monitor how long specific apps are being used. This can help identify apps that may be contributing to higher data consumption, but it will not throttle or block bandwidth for a specific app.

So if I want Facebook to have one limit and Gmail to have another, that isn’t possible directly? The device-wide cap would apply to everything running on the kiosk device, right?

Correct. The data usage cap configured through Network Data Usage Management applies at the device level, not per app. For a kiosk setup, the practical workaround is to combine:

  • Device-wide data usage limits using Network Data Usage Management.
  • Kiosk restrictions to allow only required apps.
  • App Usage Management to monitor usage patterns for individual apps.

This setup can help control total data consumption and identify high-usage apps, but it cannot assign separate bandwidth or data quotas to each app.
