Ran a 30-day inactive device audit in Hexnode today and found way more devices than I expected 😅

Some users are still working normally but their devices haven’t checked in for weeks. How do you guys usually handle this?

We don’t remove them immediately anymore.

A lot of ours were just devices with dead batteries sitting somewhere unused.

We had a few where the battery was fine too. Those ended up being devices that stopped syncing because of battery saver settings.

Opening the Hexnode app fixed it.

Good to know honestly. We were assuming inactive = device gone.

Do you contact the user first?

Yeah. Usually:

  • Send Scan Device

  • Wait a bit

  • Ask user to open the app

That fixes a surprising number of devices.

We also started checking the inactive devices report every month now. Much easier than waiting until the list gets huge.

Makes sense. We’ve mostly been ignoring the report unless there’s a problem. Probably should start reviewing it regularly.
