Android tablets installing OS updates during shifts despite Hexnode policySolved

Hi everyone. Our Android tablets used by drivers are downloading and installing system updates right when they power them on at the start of a shift, making the devices temporarily unusable. We already configured an Android OS Updates policy in Hexnode with a maintenance window set outside of working hours, but some tablets are still updating during operating hours. Is there something specific that controls whether Hexnode can actually enforce or block these Android updates?

Hello,

Thanks for reaching out to Hexnode Connect.

The ability for Hexnode to control, schedule, or postpone system update behavior on Android devices strictly depends on the device’s management type.

Hexnode can only enforce OS update policies on devices enrolled via Android Enterprise. If a tablet is enrolled as standard/Generic Android, the operating system update restrictions cannot be enforced by the UEM agent, allowing the device manufacturer or system updater to initiate updates at boot.

To verify why this is happening on your affected tablets:

  1. In the Hexnode portal, go to Manage > Devices.
  2. Click on the affected Android tablet to open its summary page.
  3. Check the Device Details section for the enrollment/management type.

If the management type displays as Generic Android, the configured OS update restrictions will not take effect on that device.

Solution:

To resolve this, you will need to disenroll and re-enroll the affected tablets using an Android Enterprise enrollment method (such as Device Owner or Profile Owner mode). Once enrolled via Android Enterprise and targeted with your OS Updates policy, options such as Update during inactive hours or Postpone update will be strictly enforced, keeping system updates contained within your scheduled maintenance windows.

I hope this helps resolve the update issues during driver shifts! Feel free to reach out if you have any more doubts or need further assistance.

Best regards,
George,
Hexnode UEM
